Gender Equality in the U.S. and Sweden

For my project for MDGs we were studying Gender equality in the world. The reason I wrote this essay was to compare the U.S. and Sweden in terms of gender equality. We had to use the U.S. and another country that we could compare our point to. I learned that there are some countries that don't share gender equality at all. The part of this project that was the most challenging, was trying to find another country that is like the U.S. for gender equality. What I'm the most proud of is that the U.S. isn't doing the worst in gender equality, our country is improving in this area.

Gender Equality in the U.S. and Sweden

Throughout the world there is a huge problem with gender equality. The United States is behind in the global fight for gender equality. The U.S. is ranked 20th in 2014 for gender equality. ("Why the U.S. Is Losing the Global Fight for Gender Equality”). The U.S. doesn’t offer enough opportunities for women like some other countries around the world. The U.S. ranks high in terms of economic opportunities for women, but falls behind in other areas such as political leadership. The U.S. ranks lower than other countries such as Sweden in women’s equality.

The inequality of women in the U.S. is significant. For example, women make up 19% of Congress. In the U.S., studies have shown that women live approximately three years longer than men, but in other countries women live six years longer. The U.S. needs to improve in women’s health. Women’s job opportunities have gone up since 2006 and 55% of technical and professional workers are now women. ("Why the U.S. Is Losing the Global Fight for Gender Equality”). Wage equality is still behind in the U.S. and women still make less than men. In the U.S. for every dollar a man makes, a woman makes 78 cents. ("78 Cents on the Dollar: The Facts about the Gender Wage Gap.").

The inequality of women in Sweden isn’t as bad as the U.S.. Sweden ranks number four in the world for gender equality. ("World Gender Gap Index 2013”). In Sweden, 57% of the government ministers are women. ("Why the U.S. Is Losing the Global Fight for Gender Equality”). Overall, Sweden is better but there are some things that are better in the U.S. for women. In Sweden, women’s health outcomes are predominantly worse than the U.S. by being ranked 69th in the world, compared to the U.S. which is 33rd in the world. ("Why the U.S. Is Losing the Global Fight for Gender Equality”). In Sweden, for every dollar a man makes, a woman makes 83.6 cents. ("Gender Pay Gap Statistics”).

Sweden is better in some ways compared to the U.S. in women’s equality. Sweden is better at pay for women and having women in politics. Women’s health isn’t that strong in either country, but it is better in the U.S. The U.S. needs to improve in women’s political leadership so that they are not far behind Sweden. The U.S. also needs to improve in paying women fairly compared to Swedish employers, who pay women more.

To improve gender equality in the U.S., the U.S. could learn from other countries such as Sweden to help find ways to improve gender equality. Even countries that are doing well such as Sweden, still need to improve in gender equality. It might take a very long time before gender equality is fully achieved.
