The Color Purple

In our final unit of our winter term called diversity, we learned about how people are treated unfairly or based on race. We watched a movie called The Color Purple by Alice Walker. We learned about how racism, repression, and domestic abuse took part thought the movie. For this Action Project, we were supposed to make a review of the movie. I talked about a couple different important things. We were also supposed to interrupt why the movie was banned. I also talked about my personal views of the movie. I think this movie is a really good movie. I don't know think it should have ever been banned. The movie talks through the eyes of the main character and through letters. I think the hardest part of the whole AP was to get it done in time. I was able to just push through and finish my review. The movie opened up a different view towards our past. I think we take everything for granted, and not realising who had it hard so we could have it easy.

The Color Purple by Alice Walker

Alice Walker. The Color Purple. (1982)
Celie is the main character of the 1985 film,The Color Purple which is based on the book, The Color Purple, written by Alice Walker. The film stars Danny Glover as Albert, Whoopi Goldberg as Celie Johnson, Margaret Avery as Shug Avery, and Oprah Winfrey as Sofia. The story takes place in the countryside of Georgia, in the early 1900’s through 1940’s. The film takes us through Celie’s emotional life. It is told from her perspective through her letters to God and her sister Nettie. There are multiple possible reasons why this film and book could have been banned.

There are several important events that build up the movie. Celie is first abused by several different men. Then she does not know much and has nowhere to go. Then Celie meets Shug and Shug teaches her about God. Now Celie is finally able to find her missing letters that Albert has been hiding for years. Celie is now able to help find herself. Celie is so frustrated with Albert that she stands up for herself and leaves to Tennessee with Shug. Celie goes back to Georgia and becomes a successful business owner. Celie then is reunited with her sister Nettie, her daughter Olivia, and her son Adam.

The first possible reason this book and film could have been banned is that the story includes incest, domestic violence and rape. The book/film tells of Celie being raped and impregnated by her father and then regularly raped by her husband, Albert. Albert also physically abused Celie; he hit her when she talked back to him. Many people may not want to hear about or expose their kids to a story that includes incest, domestic violence and rape.

Another reason why people might have banned this book and film is due to its offensive language. There is offensive language and racial slurs throughout the book/film. For example, when Sofia (played by Oprah Winfrey) punched the mayor's wife, people started screaming “Ni****” and other racial slurs towards her. Some people do not want to be exposed to offensive language.

A third reason why the book/film could have been banned was due to its inclusion of homosexuality. In a couple of scenes, two women were kissing. In one of the scenes, Shug Avery had to kiss Celie. During that time period, homosexuality was widely considered wrong and a sin. Today, some people still think homosexuality is wrong but it’s more widely accepted. Some people would not want to be exposed to homosexuality.

I disagree with banning books in general and think the book/film The Color Purple definitely should not be banned. The domestic violence it contains is still a big problem in our society and happens behind closed doors. An important part of stopping domestic violence is for people to learn about it and its terrible effect on people and families.
