The Cuff Of The Rotator

This unit, Surgery, in our STEAM class Cure, we learned about the body in all perspectives. We discussed the purpose of different surgeries and the process. For this Action Project, we were instructed to choose and present a prezi about the surgery. I decided to do rotator cuff surgery due to my mom tearing her rotator cuff last year. There are four different muscles in the rotator cuff, I chose to talk about the Subscapularis. I was really interested in this muscle because it is the most common use in everyday life. This muscle helps the whole arm move vertically and horizontal. I struggled a lot with finding different resources to use. I knew a lot about this because of my mom, but not as much as I thought. I was able to overcome this by sitting down, listening to music, and persevering. I really enjoyed this Action Project more than some of the other ones that i’ve done. Hope you enjoy!

Prepare To Be Blown Away By This M.A.G.I.C. Plan

Image
In my second elective term for my class M.A.G.I.C., we studied who inspires us and who/what motivates us. M.A.G.I.C. stands for “Mentoring Achievement of Goals and Inspiring Champions.” We studied all kinds of different people who are our mentors or inspiration. I chose Garry Kasparov as my mentor and inspiration, I chose this due to how successful he is not just in chess but in life. Kasparov is a world-class chess player and a political activist. In 2006, he had started the Russian Opposition. The Russian Opposition is a group of various political parties, movements, and groups of citizens, who oppose the policies of Vladimir Putin. Kasparov advocated and spoke out against Putin, and as a result, he was almost killed several times. I also chose a mentor in my personal life that helped me and inspired me. I chose my teammate from fencing Cameron Woods. He inspired me and drove me to success. Although I am not perfect, he taught me to be the best I cou...

Ebola vs. The World

Image
In my STEAM course called Disease, we finished our third and final unit called “World”. In this unit, we focused on the wide spread of diseases. We mainly studied the different classifications of diseases such as a pandemic, endemic, hyperendemic, epidemic, and sporadic. We studied how we can keep the public safe from something like an epidemic. In addition, we looked how an epidemic can affect the world. For this final Action Project, we were supposed to choose a disease of our interest. We were then instructed to study an outbreak of the disease from the past. I chose Ebola in the Dominican Republic. I chose this because I thought this was an expected place due to its growth of tourist. We then created a newspaper article that informs the readers about the outbreak. The new article explains how the outbreak was controlled and what we can do to avoid the outbreak. Overall this AP was really fun! I had a good time researching, doing the project, and most importantly learning something. ...

The Color Purple

Image
In our final unit of our winter term called diversity, we learned about how people are treated unfairly or based on race. We watched a movie called The Color Purple by Alice Walker. We learned about how racism, repression, and domestic abuse took part thought the movie. For this Action Project, we were supposed to make a review of the movie. I talked about a couple different important things. We were also supposed to interrupt why the movie was banned. I also talked about my personal views of the movie. I think this movie is a really good movie. I don't know think it should have ever been banned. The movie talks through the eyes of the main character and through letters. I think the hardest part of the whole AP was to get it done in time. I was able to just push through and finish my review. The movie opened up a different view towards our past. I think we take everything for granted, and not realising who had it hard so we could have it easy. The Color Purple by Alice Walker ...

Foster The People

In my first class for Humanities, called Forbidden Books. We studied religions and how they take part in our daily lives. In this unit, we are studying Dogma. Dogma is a set of principles laid down by an authority as incontrovertibly true. Dogma says you have to follow only one rule, but some people disagree with only believing in one thing. In my opinion I think we should be allowed to see different views and religions. For this Action Project, we had to find a movie, book, video, or song that was banned for religious or context reasons. The song I choose was Pumped up Kicks by Foster the People. We were instructed to make a powerpoint about why the song was banned. I found out why Pumped up Kicks was banned. The reason for it was due to the questionable lyrics thought the song. I found the banning process very interesting. The hardest part of the AP was to research the lyrics and analyzing. I was able to get through analyzing the lyrics by listening to the song and write down what I ...

What's it like to be Dyslexic

Image
For my STEAM course - Disease, we were studying mental disorders. In this unit, we learned all about mental disorders and the DSM-5. We focused heavily on the autism spectrum. We learned what it is like to be on the autism spectrum. We read a book called “The Reason I Jump” by Naoki Higashida. In addition, we also learned about different types of brain waves. We learn about what these brain waves control in our body. Delta, Theta, Gamma, Beta, and Alpha are some of the many brain waves. For this Action Project, we were instructed to find a mental disorder and make a simulation of what it’s like to have the mental disorder. We then made a lesson plan and then ran a simulation on the class. I chose a subcategory of a learning specific disorder called dyslexia. The hardest thing to do in my project was to create the simulation. I created a gif that simulates dyslexia. It was hard for me to tell if it worked because I experience dyslexia on daily basis. After making tweaks to the gif I ove...

When Does Self Defence Become Assault?

In my first class for Humanities, called Forbidden Books. The unit we are studying is called Politics. We discussed and read Fahrenheit 451. We studied censorship and why the books were banned. While studying politics we took a FE to a bookstore. The bookstore is called Women and Children first. We went here because of the controversial politics with Feminism. For this AP, we were instructed to make a Socratic dialogue. We then were allowed to choose a partner of our choice. My partner was AA , our dialogue was about “When Does Self Defence Become Assault?” We made a video that showed how we used the Socratic method. The most trouble I had with this Action Project was when we were making the questions. Coming up with Socratic questions was very hard for me. The way I overcame the struggles by reading lots of Socrates and then questioning everything. Overall I thought that the Action Project was pretty cool and inspiring. A Socratic method is a form of collaborative discussion. This is ...
